Breakout Networking Session

Guest Speaker 2: Michelle Maddox, Founder of Clootie Dumplings – Navigating Negativity and keeping true to your Purpose

Mum ( 4 children  –  ages 26,18,16,11), wife, rural business owner, entrepreneur and the owner of a wee French bull dog call Ralph!

Clootie Dumplings is run by Michelle Maddox, who had an idea to make and sell traditional Clootie dumplings,  in 2015 when her son Jacob asked if she would bake something to sell at his Christmas school fete. Michelle made a selection of traditional Clootie dumplings which turned out to be so popular that they sold out almost immediately. Jacob was back with an even larger selection of dumplings the following year and soon after, the Clootie McToot business was born. Michelle has an incredible story to tell about her journey to success.

The Clootie Clan

Clootie McToot is a disability positive employer with a 70% disabled workforce, something that Michelle takes immense pride in. Michelle loves giving people an opportunity to show of their secret powers.

A family business

At the start, Michelle ran the business from a converted utility room at home. She eventually needed a bigger space to meet demand and moved into a converted horse barn and hayloft. Since then the business has continued to grow. Michelle and her team now supply traditional Clootie dumplings and dumplings with a modern twist to retailers up and down the UK, run a shop and café in the village, and have won countless industry awards.

As well as her son Jacob, Michelle owes a lot to her extended family (including her mum, who joined the team in 2018) for the success of Clootie McToot. Her dumplings are based on a recipe handed down through generations of her family.

Breakout Networking Session

Guest Speaker 3 – Alison Cowell, Holistic Nutritionist, Author & Speaker

Alison studied holistic nutrition after being diagnosed with a debilitating auto-immune condition and told she would need to be on medication for the rest of her life.  After ‘fixing herself’ and realising the enormous impact that simple dietary changes could have, she left her 30 year career as a senior civil servant and emigrated to New Zealand in 2005 where she operated a hugely successful nutrition business, set up a health collaborative, worked with businesses and organisations providing health consultations and seminars and had an award-winning radio show. She is also a published author.

In 2018, she returned to the UK to be with her Scottish parents as they enter their twilight years. Her dad is 94 but still plays 2 rounds of golf every week at St Andrews, whilst her 89 year old Mum is proving that a diagnosis of Parkinsonism doesn’t mean you have to stop living life to the full!

Now, in addition to speaking engagements, Alison shares her knowledge and experience through on-line workshops and personal health consultations. With a database approaching 11,000, she is as busy as ever!

“The rewards of this job motivate me. The baby with digestive issues who doesn’t now need to have corrective surgery; the teenager with chronic fatigue syndrome who now ‘has her life back’; the lady with debilitating migraines for 17 years who hasn’t had a painkiller since her first consultation…… ” If we just knew how to read the constant signs and signals from our body, we could prevent so many health issues. No, you shouldn’t have a twitchy eye, ridged fingernails, coated tongue, waxy ears etc.!”

Guest Speaker 4 – Laura Raimondi of La Sicilyana for Wine Tasting

We may or may not have saved the best to last – it is time for Wine Tasting with the wonderfully talented Laura! Grab your box of wine, two wine glasses and end the evening with a little escapism to Sicily with Laura.

When a passionate Sicilian woman met a proud Scotsman, they fell in love and were married in his rugged homeland. The seeds of our business were sown on our wedding day. It only made sense to bring some of the richness of Sicilian life to the occasion and what better way to enchant our guests than to ship wine from that vibrant isle? Our guests were enthralled by the unique flavour and Sicily cast its spell over our loved ones. As Sicilian wine is not readily available in the United Kingdom and is tragically unknown in Scotland, we sought to enliven the Scottish palate with the authentic taste of the Mediterranean.

In three short years, the wine tasting business was perfected and the bistro opened to the public. It is the first of its kind in the area, boasting all the charm of silvery olive trees, lazy afternoons exploring the Catania market and the endless blue embrace of the sea.

We invite our guests with open arms to experience the unforgettable taste of Sicily!
